The folliculo-stellate (FS) cells of the anterior pituitary do not produce the classical anterior pituitary hormones. Knowing their topographic features is essential in understanding the cell-cell interactions amongst FS cells and hormone-producing cells. Horiguchi and colleagues have used transgenic S100b-GFP rats to investigate the topographic affinity of FS cells for other pituitary cells. The novel characteristics observed suggest that FS cells play important roles in determining and/or maintaining the local cellular arrangement in the presence of extracellular matrix components.
