Our understanding of the role of the adipocyte-derived factor visfatin in metabolism is controversial. To address this, Brown et al. have investigated its effects in clonal mouse pancreatic β-cells. Visfatin was found to significantly increase insulin secretion, and to regulate insulin receptor activation and mRNA expression of genes associated with β-cell function. These findings contribute to understanding the role of obesity in type 2 diabetes. Brown et al., Journal of Molecular Endocrinology.
