PhD Studentship, University of Sheffield
Via jobs.ac.uk. A PhD entitled 'Effects of obesity and weight loss on bone metabolism and structure' is available at the School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences,
Bone Biomedical Research Unit, University of Sheffield.
The studentship is funded by Sheffield NIHR Bone Biomedical Research Unit and forms part of a broad programme of translational bone research.
Fat mass can have major effects on bone health. High body weight affects skeletal loading, fat cells are an important producer of oestrogen in postmenopausal women and also produce hormones which affect bone cells directly and through central nervous system pathways.
This project will be based around a cross-sectional study of the differences in bone metabolism and bone microstructure in obese and normal-weight individuals, and will also include studying models of weight loss. The techniques used will include biochemical markers of bone turnover and high resolution peripheral quantitative CT imaging.

PhD Studentship in osteoporosis, UCL
Via www.jobs.ac.uk.
A fully funded 4-year PhD studentship entitled "Development of a new technique in osteoporosis classification for diagnosis and fracture prevention" is currently made available jointly by the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London.
Osteoporosis is considered as a progressive systemic disease characterised by a low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. Providing an improved and earlier warning of fracture risk due to osteoporosis has the potential to significantly improve patients’ wellbeing.
The project will involve the development of a new technique in osteoporosis classification for diagnosis and fracture prevention. The research of the PhD student will benefit from the complementary expertise in the two departments to tackle this interdisciplinary research project. Innovative x-ray imaging techniques pioneered in the department of Medical Physics combined with the characterisation and structural modelling expertise in the department of Mechanical Engineering will be used to understand the functions and failure of bone for varying degrees of osteoporosis.
The 4-year studentship includes tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,300 (tax free).
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in Medical Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering or applied science area. Applicants should possess a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in this area.
Further information and application details can be found at the website below. The PhD will commence in autumn 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

BBSRC Industrial Impact Fellowships
The BBSRC Industrial Impact Fellowship scheme seeks to enable highly skilled research and technology leaders from industry to transfer their skills and experience from the industrial sector into an academic setting. The scheme aims to enhance the impact of BBSRC-funded research by enabling the Fellow to bring their industrial skills, management, and commercial experience to enhance collaboration and partnership between the academic and industrial sectors. Fellows would be expected to demonstrate how their industrial background and research will benefit the work of a BBSRC-funded centre, institute, or academic department with significant BBSRC-funded research programme, to help to achieve a step-change in the economic impact of its work.
The fellowship will ideally be for a period of up to four years, where matched departmental funding will be viewed favourably by the assessment committee. The scheme is flexible with regard to the particular role proposed in an application, but it is expected that Fellows will take on a significant 'science programme manager' role within an existing BBSRC research programme. For example, the Fellows could manage innovation and business development, acting as liaison with industry partners, overseeing the development of the commercial potential of the research being pursued, etc. It is expected that Fellows will be embedded within a department and complement local technology transfer office (or equivalent) activities.
For further information, visit the website below or contact Avril Ferris. Tel: 01793 413258; Email: avril.ferris@bbsrc.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is 11 November 2009.
