BioScientifica announces record profits

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

We are pleased to announce that BioScientifica, the Society's commercial subsidiary, has reported record profits for the year ended 31 July 2009. BioScientifica Managing Director, Sue Thorn, said:

“We are really pleased with BioScientifica’s results, especially in such a recession. Profits are up by almost 13% on last year, and an increasing proportion of our business is export. We have been investing in new services, such as BioSciAlliance, a membership gateway service, that have given us a market lead. We are also one of very few companies worldwide that can provide the full range of services in-house: from publishing international journals, books and newsletters, through membership services and event management, to high-level advice on governance and strategy.

“Our new venture, BioSciAcademy, through which we provide training and advice to medical and scientific societies in the UK and Europe, has succeeded very quickly in raising our profile. Bristol is a really good centre for us to be based in. It’s good for communication with the rest of the world and we have recruited some spectacular staff here over the years. In addition, Bristol is a centre of excellence for endocrine research, so its links with the parent Society are important too. It’s just a shame there isn’t a centre suitable for holding academic conferences or we would be able to bring substantial congress business here!”

Regulation of osterix

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Osterix, a gene transcription factor expressed in differentiating osteoblasts, has been suggested to play a part in tumour growth and metastasis. Hong et al. have demonstrated that in osteoblastic cell lines prolonged exposure to parathyroid hormone inhibits osterix expression, findings that could be beneficial in regulating bone tumour activity. Enhancing pharmacokinetics of PRL, GH and their antagonists

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Human prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) are pituitary hormones that regulate the survival, proliferation and differentiation of cells in a variety of tissues and endocrine glands. Owing to their relatively low molecular weight and protein nature, these hormones and hormone antagonists are removed from the circulation by renal clearance and proteolytic degradation within responsive tissues. Until now, there have been no attempts to enhance the pharmacokinetics of PRL or its antagonist. With regard to GH, the absorption half-life of hGH has been extended by using sustained release formulations and extending its elimination half-life by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) modification to reduce renal clearance. However this process decreases receptor binding thereby reducing their efficacy. Another strategy has been to fuse it with a large carrier protein. However, this process is difficult and may sterically hinder the ability of the ligand to interact with its receptor.

Langenheim and Chen report that the genetic fusion of a serum albumin-binding peptide to the amino terminus of hPRL, hGH and their antagonists appear to be an economically feasible alternative to strategies of fusion to a large carrier protein or modification with PEG to reduce clearance and enhance half-life. This strategy required no alterations to the standard procedures for producing and purifying proteins; had minimal deleterious effects upon signal transduction and bioactivity in vitro; resulted in favourable tissue distribution of hPRL and hGH and is amenable to further modifications such as sustained release formulations to further enhance the effectiveness of these proteins by reducing the frequency of injections. Langenheim and Chen, Journal of Endocrinology, DOI:10.1677/JOE-09-0211

PhD Studentship (CASE Studentship), University of Manchester

Via www.jobs.ac.uk. A PhD Studentship entitled 'Role of urotensin II in the progression of diabetic nephropathy' is available in the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester. Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes and the principal cause of end stage renal disease (renal failure). A number of hormones are thought to play a role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy, including the peptide urotensin II. Initially identified as the most potent vasoconstrictor hormone discovered to date, urotensin II is now known to have complex effects on both the vasculature and the kidneys. We have shown that it contributes to the regulation of renal function, as well as having fibrotic actions.

In patients with diabetic nephropathy, plasma and urinary urotensin II concentrations are elevated, as are renal expression levels of the urotensin II receptor. Experimentally animals with sub-total nephrectomy, which mimic human renal failure, also have elevated levels of urotensin II and its receptor in the kidney. What is unclear is how urotensin II contributes to the progression of renal failure in diabetic nephropathy. The project will use two animal models of diabetic nephropathy - sub-total nephrectomy in the rat and the db/db mouse which develops diabetes and renal failure spontaneously - to study the activity and expression of urotensin II as the disease progresses.

For further details and to download an application form, click on the link below. The PhD studentship is due to commence in September/October 2010.

Human health scientists lead the way in communication awards

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

The Society of Biology will present this year’s Science Communication Awards to Ceri Harrop (University of Manchester) and Dr Susan Jebb (Medical Research Council Human Nutrition Research) for their passion and dedication to communicating biological science to the public. The awards will be presented on 16 November at One Great George Street, Westminster, London.

Ceri Harrop (26), winner in the New Researcher category, is a research assistant in the University of Manchester’s Faculty of Life Sciences, developing a 3D in vitro model of the human airways to study how asthma and other respiratory diseases can lead to changes in the structure and function of the airways. Ceri has used innovative approaches to explain science, and has built models, written and presented an educational TV program, taken part in radio broadcasts and held workshops, sometimes focusing on scientific themes outside her own specialist area. She has demonstrated exceptional communication skills, making complex topics fun and interesting, and has taken science to new audiences who had not previously had the opportunity to meet a practising scientist.

Dr Susan Jebb (44), winner in the Established Researcher category, is Head of Nutrition and Health Research at the Medical Research Council Collaborative Centre for Human Nutrition Research (HNR). Her research focuses on the role of the diet in the causes and treatment of obesity and its related metabolic diseases. She also leads the HNR Communications team. Susan has carried out extensive communication activities about obesity in society with a variety of audiences, and her work has had significant impact and reach - especially with policy makers. She has used a range of methods to share knowledge of her science, including writing articles for a popular magazine, giving public lectures, engaging with the media, playing a key role in government advisory committees, and giving cookery demonstrations whilst discussing affordable healthy eating.

The Science Communication Awards recognise research-active bioscientists from UK universities or institutes who make an outstanding and consistent contribution to communicating science to the public. For more information, please visit the Society of Biology website at the link below.

2010 British Biology Olympiad - registration now open

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

The British Biology Olympiad and the Biology Challenge competitions are aimed at enthusiastic post-16 biology students and are supported by the Society of Biology, BBSRC and University of Birmingham School of Biosciences. Every year the best young biologists from all types of schools throughout the UK take part in this demanding and rewarding competition. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals along with Highly Commended and Commended certificates are awarded on the results of the first round examination. These are presented by the BBO President at an Awards Ceremony in late June in London. Additional prizes are awarded to the top schools in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The competition is also used to select a team to represent the United Kingdom at the annual International Biology Olympiad which is to take place in Korea in July 2010.

Entrants will take a ninety minute multiple-choice paper between the 1-5 February 2010. High scoring students will be invited to take an additional paper and the score from this paper will be used to identify the twelve finalists. The papers will be taken in school and the answer sheets marked by the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. The School of Biosciences will also host the finals between the 14-16 April 2010. These take the form of practical tests which are used to select the UK team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). Some training for the IBO will also take place at the finals in Birmingham and the team will receive additional training in July at several venues, including the Natural History Museum and Kew Gardens.

Full details can be found on the British Biology Olympiad website below. Application forms should be submitted by 18 December 2009.
