Hormone that curbs hunger may guard against Alzheimer's (BBC News Online, 16 December 2009)

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Scientists using brain scans to investigate memory problems in humans have discovered that subjects with high levels of leptin, a hormone that controls appetite, benefit from a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, provides a potential preventative action to stall or eliminate the onset of dementia.

Cardiomyoblast cell apoptosis

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Prevention of cardiomyocyte apoptosis has been identified as a potential strategy for treatment of cardiovascular disorders. Chen et al. have demonstrated that the Leu27IGF2 analogue bound to IGF2/mannose-6-phosphate receptor triggers intracellular signalling that contributes to cell apoptosis. The study suggests that inhibition of this pathway could be used as a treatment to improve heart function in patients with heart failure. Chen et al., Journal of Molecular Endocrinology, DOI: 10.1677/JME-08-0121

Natural history of NFPA

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

O’Sullivan et al. analysed case notes of all patients who had undergone surgery for non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) in their hospital (1980–2006) in order to improve understanding of the natural history of NFPA and determine predictors of regrowth. They found that post-operative tumour remnant size and length of follow-up were the best indicators of recurrence. Patients with post-operative extrasellar remnant should be considered for adjuvant radiotherapy. O'Sullivan et al., Clinical Endocrinology, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2265.2009.03583.x

Effects of Growth Hormone on memory

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Growth hormone (GH) levels increase to high concentrations just before puberty and then progressively decline with age. GH deficiency (GHD) originating from childhood is treated with GH supplementation to increase body size (mainly height) during adolescence. To date, it is still not clear if or how early GH replacement affects memory in adulthood, or whether it can prevent the cognitive deficits commonly observed in adults with childhood onset GHD.

In a very clear and concise study, Nieves-Martinez et al. have evaluated in an animal model the question that is being debated in clinical endocrinology about the effect of GH on learning and memory. Their results indicate that GHD in adolescence deleteriously impacts brain function later in life and may result in the early emergence of age-related deficiencies in learning and memory unless prevented by GH supplementation. Nieves-Martinez et al., Journal of Endocrinology, DOI: 10.1677/JOE-09-0323

PhD Studentship (CASE Studentship), University of Manchester

Via www.jobs.ac.uk. A PhD Studentship entitled 'Role of urotensin II in the progression of diabetic nephropathy' is available in the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester. Diabetic nephropathy is a serious complication of diabetes and the principal cause of end stage renal disease (renal failure). A number of hormones are thought to play a role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy, including the peptide urotensin II. Initially identified as the most potent vasoconstrictor hormone discovered to date, urotensin II is now known to have complex effects on both the vasculature and the kidneys. We have shown that it contributes to the regulation of renal function, as well as having fibrotic actions.

In patients with diabetic nephropathy, plasma and urinary urotensin II concentrations are elevated, as are renal expression levels of the urotensin II receptor. Experimentally animals with sub-total nephrectomy, which mimic human renal failure, also have elevated levels of urotensin II and its receptor in the kidney. What is unclear is how urotensin II contributes to the progression of renal failure in diabetic nephropathy. The project will use two animal models of diabetic nephropathy - sub-total nephrectomy in the rat and the db/db mouse which develops diabetes and renal failure spontaneously - to study the activity and expression of urotensin II as the disease progresses.

For further details and to download an application form, click on the link below. The PhD studentship is due to commence in September/October 2010.

PhD Fellowships - Neuroscience of Ageing

Highly motivated candidates, with interests in the neuroendocrinology of stress and feeding in the context of ageing, are sought for PhD fellowships within an Marie Curie Training Network (Neuroendocrine Immune Networks in Ageing - NINA), supported by the European Union. Fellowships can be taken up early in 2010.

The theme of the work is highly competitive and of considerable importance for improving health throughout life so as to ensure healthy old age. The NINA network will provide a highly interactive environment in which students will receive multidisciplinary training in different member laboratories. Individual training will be provided in a range of biomedical research techniques, supplemented by group-based training in relevant theoretical and practical aspects of the biology of ageing; in addition, students will be equipped with all the generic skills necessary for pursuing independent research.

Ideally, candidates should have experience in one or more of the experimental approaches mentioned as well as a firm knowledge of the basic principles of neuroscience and physiology; evidence of previous experience (undergraduate theses, publications) will help the selection process. Candidates who do not have direct relevant experience will be considered if they provide a short, but convincing, statement about why these fellowships interest them and what they expect to bring to the projects.

With certain exceptions, nationals of Portugal/Germany may not apply for fellowships in Portugal/Germany since international mobility is an essential element of the programme. Details of nationality and residence should accompany applications.

Further questions and applications, including names of 1-2 referees, should be sent to njcsousa@ecsaude.uminho.pt and osa@mpipsykl.mpg.de no later than 15 January 2010.

An Office of Health and Medical Research-appointed Review Panel will consider each eligible EOI against the selection criteria and short list those proposals for which applicants will be invited to submit a full application. EOIs that are not short listed will be withdrawn from any further consideration and those applicants will be advised of this decision as soon as possible.

Stage Two: Short-listed candidates will be eligible to submit a full application. Short listed applicants will be notified and invited to submit a detailed proposal that builds upon the information in the EOI. Applications close on Monday 1 March 2010.
