Sessions at SfE BES conference 2010

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

The Society for Endocrinology BES 2010 conference kicks off on Monday 15 March in Manchester. This year promises to be an unmissable event, with a programme packed with workshops, symposia, poster sessions and satellites focusing on all things endocrine. We wanted to highlight some sessions taking place that you might find of particular interest. Please be aware of the early start on Monday morning so ensure you plan your journey to arrive in plenty of time. Registration opens at 09:00hrs.

Pharmaceutical Satellites - Satellite sessions flyer

Otsuka Satellite: Vaptans – a new therapy in action. The Otsuka sponsored satellite symposium to be held on Monday 15 March, 11:00 to 13:00 in Charter 3, will outline the use of oral vaptans and discuss the positive outcomes resulting from use of this exciting new therapy. The meeting will chaired by Professor John Wass (Oxford). Presentations will be given by Professor Joe Verballis (Washington, USA) and Dr Steve Ball (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), all experts in hyponatraemia.

Novo Nordisk Satellite – New modalities of treatment in type 2 diabetes. Chair: Dr Mark Evans (Cambridge). Speakers: Professor Chantal Mathieu (Leuven, Belgium) and Professor Richard Holt (Southampton). Monday 15 March 11:00 to 13:00, Charter A.

Interdepartmental peer review of clinical endocrine services - Flyer (pdf)

Professor John Bevan (Coordinator, Society for Endocrinology IPR Project) will explain how the Society for Endocrinology’s scheme works and describe the many positive outcomes that have come from the first 10 reviews. Very soon, peer review will be an important component of revalidation so ... this is your chance to comment on: What’s good and what could be improved with the current format? What should peer review concentrate on? How can more centres be encouraged to take part? Come and play your part in improving standards of endocrine care. The session will be chaired by Professor John Wass and will take place: Tuesday 16 March, 18:15 to 19:00, Exchange Auditorium.

Basic Science Meet the Expert Sessions

Following the success of previous clinical science sessions, this year the Society is introducing a number of Meet the Expert sessions in basic science. These are anticipated to be relatively informal discussions based around new basic science technologies. Topics include metabolomics in diabetes and obesity, using bioinformatics to aid research, and mutagenesis resources. Tuesday 07:15 to 08:00 and 17:00 to 18:00, Thursday 07:15 to 08:00.

Speciality Certificate Examination

In the UK, the Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) is now a compulsory component of assessment for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) for trainees whose specialist training began in or after August 2007. The first diet of the SCE in endocrinology and diabetes took place in May 2009 and the next exam will be held on 30 June 2010. Dr Mark Cooper (SCE in Endocrinology & Diabetes Examining Board Secretary) will give a brief update on the examination. Wednesday 17 March, 17:15 to 17:25, Exchange Auditorium.

A Showcase of Systems Biology - Showcase flyer (pdf)

With its unique ability to look at chemical interactions in a system as a whole, systems biology is becoming an increasingly useful research tool in the field of endocrinology. Chaired by Professor Julia Buckingham and featuring speakers from the academic and funding arenas, this session explains how the quantitative sciences are revolutionising medical research, and outlines additional funding sources that can be accessed through systems biology. 18 March, 10:00 to 12:00, Exchange Theatre.

SfE supports the National Campaign for Libel Reform

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

The Society has signed up to the National Campaign for Libel Reform. This campaign is being run jointly by Sense about Science, English PEN and Index on Censorship to campaign for reform of English libel laws. This follows on from Sense about Science’s campaign to ensure that English libel laws are not used to silence critical discussion of medical practice and scientific evidence and to discourage debate in the public arena. This campaign was launched in the wake of the case of science writer Simon Singh, who is being sued for libel for an article in The Guardian. The Society urges members to sign the petition at the link below.

Is acromegaly under-diagnosed?

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Historically, acromegaly has been under-recognised until its later stages when clinical characteristics are more apparent but treatment is more difficult. Reid et al. examined data from 324 patients presenting with acromegaly from 1981 to 2006 and found that signs, symptoms and associated comorbidities, tumour size and preoperative GH levels did not change significantly in the 26 years since the patients were diagnosed, indicating that their acromegaly was already advanced at diagnosis. The authors conclude that clinical recognition of acromegaly has not improved much in the last 25 years and that increased awareness of acromegaly amongst practitioners is required. Reid et al., Clinical Endocrinology, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2265.2009.03626.x

Maternal parity and adipokines

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Hyatt and co-workers used an established sheep model to investigate the impact of maternal parity on adipose tissue development with regard to glucocorticoid sensitivity and adipokine gene expression. The increase in fat mass associated with the firstborn was accompanied by a resetting of the leptin and glucocorticoid axis within the adipocyte. This shows the importance of parity in determining adipose tissue development and that firstborn offspring have an increased capacity for adipogenesis that may be critical in determining their adiposity. Hyatt et al., Journal of Endocrinology.

Short prolactin receptor downregulates long form

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Multiple isoforms of the human prolactin receptor are produced by alternative splicing, and the different ratios have been associated with disease. In a study on human embryonic kidney cells by Tan and Walker, the short form SF1b was shown to downregulate the expression of the long form (LF), affecting prolactin expression and cell number. This suggests that the ratio of SF1b:LF may have implications for tumour growth. Tan and Walker, Journal of Molecular Endocrinology.

This nested case-control study by Woolcott and colleagues extends the existing evidence of the association between sex hormones and breast cancer risk from mainly white study populations into a multiethnic cohort. The study confirms, for the first time, that high levels of sex hormones and low levels of sex hormone-binding globulin are associated with increased breast cancer risk in an ethnically diverse population. Rare Disease Day 2010 - 28 February

^ back to top | feedback | view as webpage

Rare Disease Day is an annual event designed to raise awareness for the multitude of people around the world suffering from conditions that affect less than 5 in 10,000 people each. Individually they affect only a small number of people, yet collectively they affect 1 in 17 people in the UK.

Owing to their scarcity, research into these diseases remains poorly integrated and inadequately funded, depriving the rare disease patient of appropriate diagnosis, treatment and support. To combat the shortfall in rare disease research, the theme for this year's Rare Disease Day is "Patients and Researchers: Partners for Life."

Rare Disease Day falls on the last day of February - 28 February - and this year Rare Disease UK will be holding three parliamentary receptions to promote awareness amongst the parliaments of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Events will be taking place worldwide. For more information please visit the websites below.
