Sessions at SfE BES conference 2010

The Society for Endocrinology BES 2010 conference kicks off on Monday 15 March in Manchester. This year promises to be an unmissable event, with a programme packed with workshops, symposia, poster sessions and satellites focusing on all things endocrine. We wanted to highlight some sessions taking place that you might find of particular interest. Please be aware of the early start on Monday morning so ensure you plan your journey to arrive in plenty of time. Registration opens at 09:00hrs.

Pharmaceutical Satellites - Satellite sessions flyer

Otsuka Satellite: Vaptans – a new therapy in action. The Otsuka sponsored satellite symposium to be held on Monday 15 March, 11:00 to 13:00 in Charter 3, will outline the use of oral vaptans and discuss the positive outcomes resulting from use of this exciting new therapy. The meeting will chaired by Professor John Wass (Oxford). Presentations will be given by Professor Joe Verballis (Washington, USA) and Dr Steve Ball (Newcastle-upon-Tyne), all experts in hyponatraemia.

Novo Nordisk Satellite – New modalities of treatment in type 2 diabetes. Chair: Dr Mark Evans (Cambridge). Speakers: Professor Chantal Mathieu (Leuven, Belgium) and Professor Richard Holt (Southampton). Monday 15 March 11:00 to 13:00, Charter A.

Interdepartmental peer review of clinical endocrine services - Flyer (pdf)

Professor John Bevan (Coordinator, Society for Endocrinology IPR Project) will explain how the Society for Endocrinology’s scheme works and describe the many positive outcomes that have come from the first 10 reviews. Very soon, peer review will be an important component of revalidation so ... this is your chance to comment on: What’s good and what could be improved with the current format? What should peer review concentrate on? How can more centres be encouraged to take part? Come and play your part in improving standards of endocrine care. The session will be chaired by Professor John Wass and will take place: Tuesday 16 March, 18:15 to 19:00, Exchange Auditorium.

Basic Science Meet the Expert Sessions

Following the success of previous clinical science sessions, this year the Society is introducing a number of Meet the Expert sessions in basic science. These are anticipated to be relatively informal discussions based around new basic science technologies. Topics include metabolomics in diabetes and obesity, using bioinformatics to aid research, and mutagenesis resources. Tuesday 07:15 to 08:00 and 17:00 to 18:00, Thursday 07:15 to 08:00.

Speciality Certificate Examination

In the UK, the Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) is now a compulsory component of assessment for Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) for trainees whose specialist training began in or after August 2007. The first diet of the SCE in endocrinology and diabetes took place in May 2009 and the next exam will be held on 30 June 2010. Dr Mark Cooper (SCE in Endocrinology & Diabetes Examining Board Secretary) will give a brief update on the examination.
Wednesday 17 March, 17:15 to 17:25, Exchange Auditorium.

A Showcase of Systems Biology - Showcase flyer (pdf)

With its unique ability to look at chemical interactions in a system as a whole, systems biology is becoming an increasingly useful research tool in the field of endocrinology. Chaired by Professor Julia Buckingham and featuring speakers from the academic and funding arenas, this session explains how the quantitative sciences are revolutionising medical research, and outlines additional funding sources that can be accessed through systems biology. 18 March, 10:00 to 12:00, Exchange Theatre.

Society for Endocrinology Special Interest Group Satellites - Satellite sessions flyer

We are delighted that three of the Society’s SIGs - Andrology, Pituitary and PCOS will be holding satellite sessions that will run in parallel on Wednesday evening starting at 18:15. Light refreshments will be available for those attending the meetings. Wednesday 17 March, 18:15 to 20:15.

Andrology – Charter A

Pituitary – Exchange Theatre

PCOS – Charter 3

Growth hormone modulation of EGF signaling

The relevance of growth factors to the pathogenesis of human cancer has long been established. Among the growth factors and growth factor receptors that have been shown to be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of different carcinoma types is the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family of peptide growth factors and the EGF receptor. Growth hormone (GH) has been previously described to regulate hepatic EGFR expression.

Gonzales et al. analyzed EGF signaling pathways in two different in vivo models: one resistant to the actions of and the other with increased circulating GH levels (transgenic mice overexpressing bovine GH). Their study provides evidence not only for the crosstalk between GH and EGF signaling in the liver but also for different mechanisms controlling EGF-induced signaling pathways. Gonzales et al., Journal of Endocrinology.

Glucocorticoids programming of glucose metabolism

Human epidemiological studies have shown that impaired intrauterine growth is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, and other diseases in later life. These associations have led to the concept that adult disease can originate in utero as a result of developmental programming of key tissues and organ systems during suboptimal intrauterine conditions associated with poor fetal growth. Often, the control procedures are stressful per se and raise maternal glucocorticoid concentrations.

Franko et al. compared the effects of maternal injection with dexamethasone or saline with no treatment from 15 to 20 days of rat pregnancy on offspring growth and glucose metabolism. Relative to untreated animals, adult glucose tolerance was improved by maternal saline injection in males but not in females, while it was impaired in female offspring but not in male offspring of the dex-treated dams. Adult glucose tolerance was related to male body fat content but not to female body fat content. Dex and saline treatments of pregnant rats have differential sex-linked effects on the growth and glucose metabolism of their offspring, which indicates that the programming actions of natural and synthetic glucocorticoids may differ. Franko et al., Journal of Endocrinology.

Australian scientists examining risk-taking behaviour in male skateboarders have shown that the presence of an attractive female promotes risk-taking behaviour in this group, and that this is associated with a rise in salivary testosterone levels. Whilst the researchers are pleased with their findings, the results of the increased risk-taking behaviour were perhaps less successful, producing more successes but also more crash landings.

Wellcome Trust PhD programmes

The Wellcome Trust is inviting applications for its new four-year PhD Programmes for basic scientists from academic institutions in the UK or Republic of Ireland. Do you have a plan for a new PhD programme that reaches across the traditional boundaries of medical research? Could you train scientists in a clinical context; bring maths, chemistry, physics or engineering to bear on a biomedical problem; or link academic with commercial or health policy research?

The Wellcome Trust wants to support up to four new four-year PhD Programmes to give scientists the training and experience needed to drive discovery and translation in research areas inspired by the following strategic areas:

Maximising the health benefits of genetics and genomics;
Understanding the brain;
Combating infectious disease;
Investigating development, ageing and chronic disease;
Connecting environment, nutrition and health.

These new programmes are intended for the support of basic scientists rather than clinicians, and will join the programmes already funded by the Wellcome Trust across the UK.

The principal applicant should be the proposed director of the programme, and a recognised international leader in his or her field. Preliminary applications should be submitted by 11 May 2010. Full applications, if invited, will be required by 13 September 2010, and decisions will be announced in December 2010.

SfE supports the Royal College of Nursing campaign on specialist nursing care

The Society for Endocrinology is supporting the Royal College of Nursing campaign to guarentee access to specialist nursing care for all patients with long term conditions. The campaign calls on all political parties to recognise the important role that specialist nurses play in providing patients with long-term care and it urges the parties to guard against any future jobs cuts in this important area. Specialist nurses save millions of pounds from health budgets through reduced complications, fewer hospital re-admissions and the expert long term management of conditions and they also offer many patients and families with a lifeline which no other service can provide.

To sign up to the RCN campaign, visit the Nursing Counts website today!

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has completed a review of sibutramine (Reductil, a treatment for obesity) after new study data raised concerns about its cardiovascular safety. The review has found that the benefits of sibutramine do not outweigh the risks of cardiovascular reactions in clinical use. The EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended suspension of the marketing authorisation for this medicine across the European Union.

Kallmann syndrome patient support group meeting

A meeting is being held by the Kallmann syndrome patient support group at the Royal Free Hospital in London on Saturday 15 May. The meeting will provide an opportunity for patients with Kallmann syndrome and other forms of hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism (HH) to meet with fellow patients and to be able to listen to expert guest speakers; Professor Pierre Bouloux and Dr Richard Quinton (both endocrinologists who specialise in Kallmann syndrome and HH), and Dr Paul Chadwick, a clinical psychologist.

Patients will be able to ask any questions they may have on current hormone replacement therapy options and available fertility treatments or any other issue they wish to raise. People who have attended such meetings in the past have found the chance to meet other patients and to talk about experiences in a relaxed atmosphere to be very beneficial. The meeting is open to anybody with an interest in Kallmann syndrome or HH.

Cortisol and thyroid autoimmunity in the elderly

A recent study by Terzidis et al. has investigated whether glucocorticoid activity, which increases in old age, is involved in thyroid autoimmunity in the elderly. Previous studies have shown that thyroid antibodies (ThAb) increase with old age, while some have demonstrated a subsequent decline in ThAb in very old age.

The study conducted thyroid function, cortisol, glucose and insulin measurements in 321 ambulatory individuals aged 51–95 years. Increased glucocorticoid levels were found to be associated with higher ThAb positivity in older subjects. Healthy subjects with no ThAb detected were older and female, indicating a difference in results between males and females. The authors suggest that there is a rise in ThAb in females until approximately 10 years after the menopause, when there is a gradual decline back to the levels that would be expected at a younger age. The study concludes that more research is needed to define the role of glucocorticoids in this pattern of ThAb levels in the elderly.
Popular antidepressant 'cancels out' effect of breast cancer drug (The Daily Telegraph, 9 February 2010)

Canadian scientists have shown that taking the antidepressant paroxetine (brand name Seroxat) to relieve the side effects of the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen could result in a higher mortality when compared to those not taking paroxetine. Experts advise against any sudden decisions but recommend a review of the data to clarify the nature of the interaction.

Cambridge scientists have combined a glucose sensor with an 'insulin pump' in a closed loop system in vivo to create an artificial pancreas that reacts to changes in blood glucose levels. The researchers report that in trial patients with type 1 diabetes, the device keeps blood glucose levels within the 'normal' range 60% of the time, and prevents hypoglycaemic events.
