Update on libel reform - First reform of the new Parliament? Libel Reform Campaign respond to Lord Lester's Libel Reform Bill

The Society for Endocrinology is pleased to inform you that reforms to the UK's defamation laws are currently in progress.

On 9 July 2010 Lord Lester of Herne Hill's Defamation Bill received a second reading in the House of Lords. The Bill's intentions are to bring UK defamation law - which is being widely criticised for its chilling effect on academic debate - into line with modern means of communication.

This represents a serious commitment by the UK Government to amend what is a drastically outdated set of laws, and is welcomed by all those who signed the petition at the Libel Reform Campaign. You can read more about the Bill, and sign the Libel Reform Campaign petition, at the link below.

TSH stimulation and PET scanning

In general, thyroglobulin (Tg) and a radioactive scan correlate well with each other in follow-up studies for differentiated thyroid carcinoma after thyroid remnant ablation. To maximise radioiodine uptake in malignant thyroid cells, it is necessary to elevate TSH cells by the withdrawal of thyroid hormone therapy or, more recently to use recombinant human TSH. However, whether PET scanning for the detection of Tg-positive and scan –negative metastases for DTC should be performed under TSH stimulation remains controversial.

Ma et al. searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane library for prospective controlled trials using TSH stimulation as an intervention. A meta-analysis was carried out using the Review Manager software. Seven prospective controlled studies with 168 patients were found. PET scans taken under TSH stimulation altered clinical management in 9% of patients in 5 paired studies.

The data analysis undertaken by the authors indicates that TSH stimulation should be recommended for DTC patients undergoing PET scanning. Ma et al. (2010), European Journal of Endocrinology, in press (published online on 19 May 2010).

Society of Biology education strategy

Dr Mark Downs, Chief Executive of the Society of Biology, has written to all Member Organisations to highlight the Society's commitment to education. Please find his letter below:

"Everybody is an education expert – at least that’s what many people think: after all we are all 'customers' of education systems and processes at some point in our lives. The reality, however, is that education policy and practice is enormously diverse and equally complex, ranging from engaging young primary school children through to vocational and academic qualifications. There are a multitude of acronyms and a confusing array of institutions involved.

"The Society of Biology is an active participant in education issues. As well as influencing policy, we also have a key role in helping with interpretation of the jargon that so often surrounds education debates. With that in mind, the Society will be holding a seminar this autumn to help any of our members who are not experts, get under the skin of education policy and how exams are set and assessed, perhaps helping to answer the hotly debated issue as to whether exams really are getting easier.

"It is a good time to create momentum around education. Michael Gove, our Minister for Education has already indicated a likely shift to more 'traditional' A Levels, with the abolition of AS exams along the way. The exam regulator OFQUAL has rejected the examining boards’ proposals for new specifications for the GCSE examinations and the Qualifications & Curriculum Development Authority (QCDA) is to be abolished. These are significant changes that need to be monitored and
influenced.

"During the course of this year, the Society has been working with our Member Organisations to create a strong voice for biology, working both independently and with the other sciences, especially through SCORE (Science Community Representing Education). There has been real progress with the proposed new specifications for biology progressing much further than some of the other disciplines. In the past, some have positioned biology as the easy option, especially
amongst the sciences. But the evidence shows exactly the opposite. According to a range of independent measures, biology scores as one of the hardest A levels. In terms of relative grading, it is two grades 'harder' than some other disciplines. But we need to be careful to ensure biology stays relevant and focused on skills, not just knowledge. Practical training has always been under threat. It is more complicated in biology than many of the other sciences and certainly at university
level, becomes extremely expensive. As the new coalition Government starts to review spending cuts across the public sector, the Society will be campaigning hard to ensure biology doesn’t lose out. It would be all too easy for Government and the university sector to move away from hands on practical skills in the laboratory and in the field in favour of the cheaper option of demonstrations or videos. For that reason, practical skills will continue to be a focus of our work at all levels. The
Practical Biology website has proved increasingly valuable to biology teachers and we now need to ensure it grows and becomes sustainable.

"As well as influencing formal education policy all learned societies must help show that the sciences are exciting as well as contributing significantly to our society and the economy. How often have we heard that it was an inspirational teacher that attracted someone into the study of biology? In a world of limited resources, we must make sure that teachers continue to be strongly supported with continual professional development available and resources easily accessible to help them make the current curriculum as engaging as possible, providing opportunities for study outside of core material to enrich learning. The Society of Biology will be pushing this independently, and through SCORE, and working closely with other institutions such as the National Science Learning Centre to ensure material is as widely available as possible.

"Having succeeded in engaging students in studying biology, there is a further challenge of ensuring they maintain their association with the subject. To do that we need interesting and relevant careers material to help make choices. With this in mind, the Society is pulling together new resources for careers but will aim not to reinvent the wheel. Our Member Organisations have a wealth of material which needs to be drawn together and made available to all biologists, not just those in particular disciplines."

Metformin blocks colon cancer

Many studies link a high calorie diet to an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Studies of diabetic cancer patients receiving metformin suggested the drug improves outcomes.

Algire and colleagues observed that a high calorie diet increases insulin levels, increases expression of fatty acid synthase (FASN) and increases colon tumour growth in mice. Metformin reduced insulin levels, thereby reducing expression of FASN. In addition, they suggest metformin may have some direct antiproliferative activity on tumour cells.
Research published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society has further characterised the effects of the different types of body fat, finding that fat carried around the hips is more detrimental to women's memory than that carried elsewhere. The study authors propose that this is due to greater production of oestrogen by belly fat than by hip fat.

Nature news reports that a number of universities and research institutions are calling for a revision to the Intellectual Property policy of the European Commission's Innovative Medicines Joint Technology Initiative, a 7th Framework Programme-funded strategy. The complainants say that the policy is unbalanced towards industries - which collaborate on projects as an essential part of the initiative - and the cost of participation too high.

Liberating the NHS - Government publishes White Paper on reforms

A new Government White Paper outlines dramatic changes that will soon take place within the NHS. A central feature of the paper is the simplification of the service's structure: Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts will be abolished and control of provision of services and the health budget will be transferred to local consortia of GPs.

The Paper also addresses the provision of care by the NHS: a shift from central to local control facilitates a more patient-led system, and appraisal of services by patients will be included in a reformed Outcomes Framework. Furthermore, relaxation of financial regulations on NHS trusts will encourage 'social enterprise'.

Added via www.jobs.ac.uk

Based at Peninsula Medical and Dental School, Plymouth, this 3 year PhD studentship will look into the extent to which paediatric and adult dental patients are exposed to chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) during the course of treatment. Evidence suggest that these chemicals may interfere with hormonal systems, hence they have been dubbed 'endocrine disrupting chemicals.'

The post will involve chromatographic (LC-MS/MS) analysis of biological samples and potentially, advanced mathematical modelling of data obtained. Applicants with a science background (BDS, BMBS, BSc Biomedical Sciences/Biology/Pharmacology/Chemistry or similar) and an aptitude for mathematics are desirable.

Diabetes UK launches new online diabetes risk test

Developed by Diabetes UK - the charity for people with diabetes - and in collaboration with the University of Leicester and the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, the new Diabetes Risk Score test enables concerned individuals to gain an informed measure of their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The test consists of 7 questions on established risk factors such as BMI, waist circumference, age and family history, and summarises the results into a simple low to high risk end score. Also featured throughout the test are 9 case studies, which adds a more personal touch and enables people taking the test to identify with their level of risk and gain advice on what to do next.

You can find the Diabetes Risk Score test by following the link below to the Diabetes UK website.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has launched its new website Frontline First, which aims to protect and improve frontline services in the NHS during the anticipated spending cuts.

At Frontline First, nurses can use their intimate experience of frontline services to expose cuts that affect patient care, highlight where there is waste in the system, and bring nurse-led innovations that save money and improve patient care to the attention of the wider community.

This website therefore will act as the primary channel for information, which can then be used by the RCN to inform decisions on spending cuts. To visit the website and have your say, please follow the link below.

New guidelines for reporting research on animals

The National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) has produced guidelines in the form of a checklist on reporting one's research in animals. The 'ARRIVE' guidelines were prompted by the NC3R's view that incorrect reporting of animal research impacts badly upon a paper's clinical and scientific relevance, and its subsequent usefulness to the scientific and medical community.

Melanocortin blockade attenuates cardiac cachexia

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a major public health problem in western countries, with an incidence approaching 10 per 1000 per year in those aged 65 years or older. The prognosis of CHF patients is significantly worsened by the development of cachexia. Data from a number of studies support a critical role for the central melanocortin system in the pathogenesis of cachexia of chronic disease.

Scarlett et al. show that, in murine and rat models of heart failure, chronic blockade of central melanocortin signalling using genetic and pharmacological techniques is able to attenuate the metabolic manifestations of cardiac cachexia. Scarlett et al. (2010), Journal of Endocrinology 206, 121-130.

Neonatal nicotine exposure programs leptin resistance

Epidemiological studies show that maternal smoking during pregnancy might be a risk factor for childhood obesity and hypertension. Experimental data suggest that exposure to nicotine, the main addictive compound in tobacco smoke, during gestational and lactational periods, is responsible for increased adiposity in offspring.

As previous studies show that there is a high rate of relapse among women, de Oliviera et al. investigated the effects of perinatal nicotine exposure on intermediary metabolism in a rat model. They found that nicotine exposure during lactation programmes rats for adipocyte hypertrophy in adult life as well as for leptin and insulin resistance. De Oliviera et al.
European research funding explained

The Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology (POST) have published a new document outlining the European Commission's research funding programme, known as the 7th Framework Programme or FP7.

Within you will find information on the history and structure of FP7, the current and past involvement in the Programmes by UK academia and industry, and future considerations to be made by the UK in the next Programme (FP8), work towards which is currently taking place. Anyone seeking FP7 funding may find it helpful to familiarise oneself with the Programme throught this factsheet.

FP7 has been a major funder of UK research since it began in 2007, and will no doubt continue to be a significant contributor to science and technology in the UK until it ends in 2013, when it will be replaced by the next Programme. You can view the POST factsheet or the CORDIS website (through which FP7 funding is coordinated) by following the links below.

Announcement: New impact factors of the ESE?s official journals

The new impact factors for ESE's official journals have now been announced.

The impact factor for European Journal of Endocrinology remains extremely strong at 3.539. This is not far short of its record-breaking figure for the previous year, withstanding a significant increase in the number of papers it published which would normally depress the impact factor. This is an extraordinary achievement for the journal. The recent invigoration in the programme of commissioned review articles, together with the strict policy on acceptance rates should stand the journal in good stead in future years. The five-year impact factor also remains impressive at 3.796.

Journal of Endocrinology’s impact factor has risen slightly to 2.860 and the underlying five-year figure is 3.045. Journal of Molecular Endocrinology has held firm at 3.221. JME’s energetic commissioning of review articles has proved very successful over the last year and a half, so this should position it well for future impact factors. JOE has also recently begun to increase its review content, similarly bolstering its prospects.

Endocrine-Related Cancer continues to give the strongest showing of ESE’s four journals at 4.282. Its five-year figure remains robust at 5.683.

ESE journals are on-line at http://www.euro-endo.org/journals.

TRPC1-Orai1-STIM1 in hyperparathyroidism

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is the second most common endocrine disorder in the western world. While the underlying uncoupling of parathyroid hormone secretion from elevated serum calcium which causes pHPT is understood, the mechanism responsible for the control of parathyroid cell intracellular Ca2+ has not been identified from the many which have been proposed.
Lu and colleagues report that L-type voltage operated Ca2+ channels are not involved, and produce strong evidence that a complex of transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1), Ca2+ release-activated Ca2+ modulator 1 (Orai1), and stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1) is the key mechanism regulating intracellular Ca2+ in human parathyroid cells.
CypB in PRL signalling

Evidence increasingly demonstrates of role for prolactin (PRL) in the pathogenesis of human breast cancer. Cyclophilin B (CypB) is a binding partner necessary for the transactivation of PRL-responsive genes involved in breast cancer.
In this study, Fang and colleagues used siRNA to examine the effect of CyB knockdown in PRL-stimulated breast cancer cells. They conclude that the absence of CypB significantly impairs PRL-induced gene expression in breast cancer cells, resulting in reduced cell growth and migration.
SfE Obesity Management Symposium - for the endocrinologist, 9-10 September 2010

One of the major aims of the Society for Endocrinology is to develop the role of endocrinologists in the delivery of services for severely obese patients. The key to this is the training of future endocrinologists in the area of obesity and metabolism. To this end, the Society’s Obesity Special Interest Group (convened by Dr Sadaf Farooqi (Cambridge) and Professor John Wilding (Liverpool)) has developed a national symposium that will focus on practical aspects of obesity management and service delivery. The second symposium will be held at the Institute of Metabolic Science, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

The programme for the two days is now available on the website along with more information and details on how to register.

The total number of delegates has been limited to 40 to ensure that a collegiate atmosphere is generated that will provide an effective forum for networking with peers and faculty, so we recommend you register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

From Brain Drain to Brain Gain - The Morebrain Project

Mobility of researchers is a driving force for innovation through collaboration, yet this can sometimes lead to a shortage in research expertise through excessive export - a phenomenon termed brain drain.

An EU-funded project is looking to understand the factors that influence researchers to move between countries, called the 'Morebrain project'. As a researcher you are invited to take 15 minutes to complete an online survey that will give some insights into the push and pull incentives behind researchers' mobility decisions.

You can take part in the Morebrain project by following the link below.

Sibutramine (Reductil) - information from MHRA

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has completed a review of sibutramine (Reductil, a treatment for obesity) after new study data raised concerns about its cardiovascular safety. The review has found that the benefits of sibutramine do not outweigh the risks of cardiovascular reactions in clinical use. The EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has recommended suspension of the marketing authorisation for this medicine across the European Union.
